U.S. President Donald Trump has extended his congratulations to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney following Carney’s recent electoral win, according to a statement from the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office.
During a phone call between the two leaders, they affirmed the importance of cooperation between Canada and the United States as “independent, sovereign nations” working together for mutual benefit. The statement added that both leaders agreed to meet in person in the near future.
The call followed Monday’s federal election in which Canada’s Liberal Party, led by Carney, secured a fourth consecutive term in government. Despite winning 43.5% of the national vote and 169 out of 343 seats in the House of Commons, the party narrowly missed the 172-seat threshold required for a majority.
The opposition Conservative Party captured 144 seats with 41.4% of the vote, according to preliminary results from Elections Canada, the country’s independent electoral body.
Carney’s victory comes amid ongoing trade tensions with Washington, driven by Trump’s aggressive tariff policies and his controversial rhetoric about annexing Canada — a position that has drawn international criticism and domestic resistance. Carney has previously stated he would only visit the U.S. capital for talks that demonstrate respect for Canadian sovereignty.
Despite the political frictions, economic ties between the two countries remain deeply intertwined. Roughly 75% of Canadian exports are destined for the U.S., whereas Canada accounts for just 17% of U.S. exports.
Canada is also the United States’ largest foreign supplier of crude oil, contributing significantly to America’s projected $45 billion trade deficit with Canada in 2024 — a figure driven largely by U.S. energy demands.
