U.S. President expresses hope for breakthrough in Middle East peace efforts
WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday claimed that Israel has agreed to a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza, raising the possibility of a temporary halt to the months-long conflict.
In a statement shared on social media, Trump said:
โMy representatives held extensive and productive meetings with Israeli officials. Israel has agreed to the necessary conditions to finalize the 60-DAY CEASEFIRE, during which time we will work with all parties to end the war.โ
He noted that Qatari and Egyptian mediators โ key players in previous negotiations โ will be responsible for delivering the final proposal to all stakeholders. Trump expressed hope that Hamas would accept the terms, describing the potential ceasefire as a vital step โfor the greater good of the Middle East.โ
While no official confirmation has yet come from the Israeli government, Trumpโs announcement has sparked fresh speculation about diplomatic efforts behind the scenes.
Meanwhile, deadly Israeli airstrikes continue in Gaza. At least 95 Palestinians were reported killed on Monday in a series of attacks that targeted a cafe, a school, food distribution sites, and a hospital.
One of the deadliest incidents occurred at the Al-Baqa seaside cafรฉ in northern Gaza City, where an Israeli strike killed 39 people. Among the victims was journalist Ismail Abu Hatab, along with multiple women and children gathered at the location. Dozens more were injured in the strike, which witnesses say was carried out by Israeli fighter jets.
Another 62 people were reported killed in Gaza City and across northern parts of the territory, amid an intensifying bombardment campaign.
Despite the mounting civilian toll, diplomatic efforts appear to be gaining momentum. Trumpโs remarks, while unofficial, suggest a renewed push toward brokering a pause in hostilities โ though whether the ceasefire materializes remains uncertain.
