The Trump administration has introduced an updated version of a former asylum application app, now redesigned to facilitate the voluntary departure of individuals living illegally in the United States.
Announced on Monday, the app—renamed CBP Home—is part of the administration’s push to encourage self-deportation, presenting it as a cost-effective alternative to forced removals.
“The app provides illegal aliens in the United States with a straightforward way to declare their intent to voluntarily depart, offering them the chance to leave before facing harsher consequences,” said Pete Flores, acting commissioner for U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Previously known as CBP One, the app was once used to schedule asylum appointments. However, after President Donald Trump took office, its functionality shifted, ultimately leading to the cancellation of tens of thousands of border appointments.
Since January 2023, more than 900,000 individuals have been allowed entry into the U.S. on immigration parole under the old CBP One system, typically for two-year periods.
The Trump administration has consistently advocated for unauthorized migrants to leave the country voluntarily.
“The CBP Home app gives aliens the option to leave now and self-deport, so they may still have the opportunity to return legally in the future and live the American dream,” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated on X. “If they don’t, we will find them, we will deport them, and they will never return.”
