US President Donald Trump accused Ukraine’s leadership of showing “zero gratitude” for American efforts to end the war with Russia. He issued the remarks on Sunday through a post on his social media platform Truth Social.
Trump said Ukrainian officials failed to appreciate Washington’s attempts to negotiate a settlement. He also criticised European states for continuing to buy oil from Russia during the conflict.
He argued the war “would have never happened” under what he described as “strong and proper US and Ukrainian leadership.” He again said the war began during “the Sleepy Joe Biden Administration,” a phrase he used to attack his predecessor.
Trump repeated his claim that the 2020 election was “rigged and stolen.” He insisted Russian President Vladimir Putin “would never have attacked” if he had remained in office.
He said he “inherited a war that should have never happened,” calling it a conflict that harms every side. He blamed the fighting for the deaths of millions and described the war as “a loser for everyone.”
US and Ukraine Discuss 28-Point Peace Proposal
Senior US and Ukrainian officials met in Geneva to review a 28-point peace plan drafted by Washington. The proposal reportedly requires Ukraine to surrender additional territory to Russia as part of a broader settlement.
The draft also limits Ukraine’s military size and demands that Kyiv formally abandon its goal of joining NATO. Trump said the plan would not be his “final offer.” He gave Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy until Thursday to provide a formal response.
Zelenskyy acknowledged he faces a severe dilemma. He said the choice is between “loss of our dignity or the risk of losing a key partner.”
Allies Warn of Security Risks in Draft Plan
Leaders of nine European countries, Japan, Canada, and senior EU officials expressed concern on Saturday. They warned the proposed military limits “would leave Ukraine vulnerable to future attack” and undermine regional security.
They also described the territorial concessions as a significant risk for Ukraine’s long-term sovereignty and defence capacity.
