US President Donald Trump abruptly departed the Group of Seven summit on Monday, signaling deeper US involvement in the escalating Israel-Iran conflict and issuing a dramatic call for residents to flee Tehran.
Before flying out of Canada mid-summit, Trump took to his Truth Social platform, warning, “Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!” The post sparked global alarm as tensions in the Middle East continued to spiral.
At a group photo with fellow G7 leaders in the scenic Canadian resort of Kananaskis, Trump announced his early exit. “I have to be back to Washington as soon as I can. I wish I could stay for tomorrow, but they understand—this is big stuff,” he said.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that Trump would attend the leaders’ dinner before returning to Washington. His absence on the final day of the summit means he will miss key talks with the leaders of Ukraine and Mexico.
Though he has avoided confirming direct US involvement in Israeli strikes, Trump hinted at imminent action. “As soon as I leave here, we’re going to be doing something,” he said.
Despite expressing support for diplomacy, Trump has openly praised Israeli strikes, which have killed nearly 225 Iranians—including senior military commanders and nuclear scientists. Iran has retaliated with missile and drone attacks that left 24 dead in Israel.
Meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Trump warned, “Iran is not winning this war… they should talk, and they should talk immediately, before it’s too late.” A White House spokesperson emphasized that US forces in the region remain in a defensive posture.
European G7 leaders had hoped to issue a joint statement urging calm, but Trump reportedly declined to commit the US to the draft.
French President Emmanuel Macron called on Israel to avoid targeting Iranian civilians, while British Prime Minister Keir Starmer echoed calls for de-escalation, saying there was a shared concern over Iran’s nuclear ambitions but also a consensus for restraint.
As the summit closes under the shadow of mounting conflict, Trump’s exit leaves both the G7 and the world grappling with uncertainty over America’s next move.
