A tragic accident in Bangladesh claimed at least 24 lives after a passenger bus fell into the Padma River. The incident occurred while the vehicle attempted to board a ferry crossing. Officials confirmed the accident happened near Daulatdia in Rajbari district, roughly 100 kilometres from Dhaka.
The bus carried around 40 passengers at the time of the incident. Witnesses reported that the vehicle lost control while approaching the ferry platform. Moments later, the bus overturned and plunged into deep water.
Bus Sank Deep Into the River
According to rescue authorities, the bus sank nearly 30 feet below the river surface. The sudden fall left passengers trapped inside the submerged vehicle. Emergency teams quickly launched rescue operations after receiving distress alerts.
Rescuers later recovered 22 bodies from inside the bus. Among the victims were six men, eleven women, and five children. Additionally, two women died after rescuers pulled them from the water alive.
As a result, the confirmed death toll reached 24 people. Officials fear that additional passengers may still be missing.
Massive Rescue Operation Launched
Rescue teams mobilized rapidly to manage the emergency. Four fire service units and ten professional divers led the search effort. Meanwhile, the army, police, coast guard, and local administration provided support.
Heavy equipment, including cranes, helped lift the bus from the river. Divers continued searching surrounding waters to locate possible survivors or victims. Authorities maintained operations despite challenging underwater conditions.
Ongoing Search for Missing Passengers
Officials continue to assess passenger numbers to determine how many people remain unaccounted for. Rescue workers are scanning nearby river areas as a precaution. Families gathered near the accident site, anxiously waiting for updates.
Authorities urged calm while promising transparent communication during rescue operations. Search teams remain focused on completing recovery efforts as quickly as possible.
Frequent Transport Accidents Raise Safety Concerns
Bangladesh experiences hundreds of fatal road and ferry accidents each year. Experts often link these incidents to overcrowding, infrastructure limitations, and operational risks. River crossings, although essential for transport, sometimes pose additional safety challenges.
Therefore, tragedies like this renew concerns about transport safety standards. Improved regulation and stricter monitoring are frequently discussed following such incidents.
A Community in Mourning
The accident has deeply affected families and local communities. Rescue teams continue working while authorities coordinate relief and response measures. Meanwhile, investigations are expected to examine how the vehicle lost control.
Although rescue efforts remain ongoing, the tragedy highlights the risks faced by daily commuters. For many families, the journey that began as routine travel ended in heartbreaking loss.
