The Khawatoons, Pakistan’s first all-women comedy troupe, are set to perform again at District 19 this Friday, September 19. The show will run from 7:30pm to 9pm, promising 90 minutes of sharp, witty humour.
According to the group’s Instagram, the event is rated 16+, and audiences can expect adult comedy delivered through a female lens. Tickets cost Rs1,500 and are available on Ticketwala or at the venue entrance.
Comedy by Women, for Women
Speaking to The Express Tribune, troupe member Ashika Shaikh confirmed that the upcoming event will be a women-only show.
“It’s a safe space for women to enjoy adult comedy,” she explained. “Our shows are interactive and depend heavily on audience participation. When it’s a women-only show, the ladies can relax, come out of their shell, and let loose with us.”
Breaking Barriers in Comedy
Founded in 2016 by Faiza Saleem, The Khawatoons remain Pakistan’s first all-girls comedy troupe. Over nine years, they have carved out their place in the country’s male-dominated comedy industry. Ashika, who has been part of the troupe for eight years, reflected on the challenges.
She said female comedians must work twice as hard as their male counterparts. “We aren’t just doing comedy,” she added. “We’re also fighting the stereotype that women aren’t funny. So you’re working extra hard to appease an audience that wants you to not be funny.”
Despite the hurdles, the troupe has stayed resilient. “We’ve been lucky,” Ashika said. “We’ve been at this long enough to find our voice, our place, and our people.”
Building Community at District 19
District 19, a multifunctional urban space in Karachi, will host the show. The venue promotes creativity and social exchange, attracting both locals and travellers. It has become an alternative cultural hotspot where people can co-work, learn, and gather.
Nine Years Strong
The Khawatoons’ current lineup includes Faiza Saleem, Ashika Shaikh, Jaweria Khan, Amtul Baweja, Nimra Ali Zaidi, Shanzeh Ishtiaq, and Zemal Amin. The group continues to perform across Karachi at venues like IBA City Campus and Habitt City.
Now, with their latest performance at District 19, The Khawatoons promise another evening of unfiltered comedy and relatability. Audiences can expect banter, fresh jokes, and a space to laugh freely.
