Desis around the world breathed a collective sigh of relief after Pakistani spice giant Shan Foods revealed its bizarre soft drink announcement was nothing but an April Fools’ Day prank.
On March 27, Shan Foods shocked everyone by announcing a new range of masala-flavoured sodas, including Chaat, Tandoori, Pani Puri, and Butter Chicken Masala Cola.
The announcement quickly went viral. Some people laughed, others were horrified, and many were left speechless at the idea of drinking butter chicken in liquid form. A video even surfaced showing people at Shan’s marketing agency in North America pretending to taste the strange new drinks.
The Reveal
On April 1, Shan Foods finally put an end to the confusion. In a humorous clarification, the company wrote: “Butter Chicken Masala Cola is not real and it cannot hurt you.”
While many fans were relieved the weird drinks weren’t real, quite a few actually said they would have loved to try the Butter Chicken Masala Cola.
For now, the culinary world can rest easy. No masala cola is coming to Pakistani stores. Still, Shan Foods has once again proven it knows how to grab attention with a clever prank.
However, this one definitely ranks among the best April Fools’ jokes by a Pakistani brand in recent years.
