LAKKI MARWAT – In yet another targeted assault on local peace efforts, the head of a peace committee and two of his companions were shot dead by terrorists in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Lakki Marwat district on Sunday, police confirmed.
The victims were ambushed in the Kara Wanda area while traveling toward Qabol Khel. Shahid Khan, spokesperson for Lakki Marwat police, identified the deceased as Ghulam Dastagir, widely known as Fauji, the chief of the Shahab Khel peace committee, along with his associates Saleem Khan and Salahuddin.
The killings mark a grim continuation of escalating militant activity in Lakki Marwat, where local peace committees have increasingly become the target of terrorist violence. Following the incident, security forces launched a search operation in the area to locate the assailants.
Peace committees across KP have come under repeated attacks in recent months. On April 29, members of a peace committee in Lakki Marwat’s Begukhel area engaged in a deadly gun battle with armed suspects after an elderly man was killed and his relatives were injured.
Just days earlier, on April 26, a devastating blast at a peace committee office in South Waziristan’s Wana City claimed the lives of seven people and injured 16 others, including committee member Saifur Rehman. According to police, the explosion occurred during an ongoing meeting, making the peace committee office the clear target. At least five of the injured were reported in critical condition.
These repeated attacks highlight the growing threat faced by community-led peace initiatives in KP, which remain on the frontlines in resisting militant influence and maintaining order in high-risk regions.
