ISLAMABAD: Temperatures in Pakistan, including Rawalpindi and Islamabad, will fall further in the days ahead. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said both day and night temperatures will continue to decline as cold continental air remains over the region. The department advised the people to take precautions, especially during early morning and nighttime hours.
A PMD official reported that Rawalpindi and Islamabad recorded a minimum temperature of 5 degrees Celsius on Sunday. He added that the temperature is likely to decrease sharply at night over the next few days. The official further noted that most northern areas will experience extremely cold conditions during mornings and nights.
Fog and Smog Likely in Punjab
The Met Office also warned that shallow fog and smog could develop in parts of Punjab, particularly during the morning and nighttime hours. These weather conditions may reduce visibility and affect road and air travel. Authorities have advised motorists to exercise caution while driving during foggy or smoggy periods.
Extremely Low Temperatures in Upper Regions
Meanwhile, some of the country’s lowest temperatures were recorded in northern and mountainous regions. Leh experienced minus 8 degrees Celsius, Skardu minus 7, and Gilgit minus 5. Babusar and Kalat recorded minus 3 degrees Celsius. These areas are particularly vulnerable to frost and icy road conditions.
Residents in affected areas are advised to wear warm clothing and take protective measures. The department also urged local administrations to ensure sufficient heating supplies for schools, hospitals, and other public facilities.
The PMD will continue monitoring the weather and issue timely updates as temperatures drop further. Citizens are encouraged to stay informed through official bulletins to minimize health risks.
Winter’s first heavy rainfall and snowfall alert
Earlier, a long spell of heavy rain and snowfall is about to start in several regions in Pakistan. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rain and snowfall in the next few days. The PMD announced major relief for drought-stricken areas, including Balochistan, as a strong westerly system approaches the province.
Moreover, the Met Office stated that rains are expected to continue throughout the month with short intervals. These rains are likely to persist due to continued moisture movement from the Arabian Sea.
