Authorities have suspended four school employees after uncovering a coordinated attempt to cheat in a Class 12 examination using ChatGPT. According to investigators, someone inside the examination centre photographed the question paper and shared it with accomplices outside the country. Those individuals then used ChatGPT to find answers, printed them, and tried to return the material to students during the ongoing exam.
Fraud Uncovered During Surprise Inspection
The incident came to light on February 18 at the J.K. Boman War Junior Science and Arts College examination centre in Chamurshi, Gadchiroli district in Maharashtra, during the Class 12 political science exam. Zilla Parishad chief executive officer Suhas Gade ordered a surprise inspection after receiving a tip about possible irregularities. Consequently, officials discovered micro notes and printed lists of answers generated by ChatGPT.
Investigators found that the photograph of the question paper was sent abroad while the exam was underway. Then, individuals outside India used ChatGPT to generate answers. Afterward, they printed the responses with the intention of delivering them back to the examination centre. However, timely action by the inspection team prevented the delivery and stopped mass copying.
Following the discovery, the CEO immediately formed an inquiry committee to investigate the matter thoroughly. The committee confirmed the organised attempt to cheat and identified those involved. Therefore, authorities filed a police complaint at Chamurshi police station. The complaint was lodged by Sudhir Akhara, in‑charge group education officer.
Suspensions and Strengthened Oversight
Police have registered a case against three teachers, the centre head, and a peon. Following this, the education department has suspended all the accused employees. The incident has caused serious concern among officials in the Gadchiroli district. The education department has directed officials to increase surveillance and surprise checks, as well as tighten security at all centres to avoid such incidents in the future.
