ISLAMABAD: Sri Lanka kept their hopes alive in the Tri-Nation T20 Series with a commanding nine-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the fifth match of the tournament. The win came as a major boost for the side, which had failed to secure points in its previous two outings.
Zimbabwe won the toss and elected to bat first on a wicket that appeared friendly for stroke-making. The team posted 146 for five in 20 overs at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Captain Sikandar Raza said the decision to bat first aimed to set a demanding total and exploit the favourable pitch conditions.
Sri Lanka delivered a disciplined bowling effort to restrict Zimbabwe. Their attack kept the scoring in check and prevented Zimbabwe from building pressure through partnerships. Despite Zimbabwe’s steady start, Sri Lanka’s bowlers tightened control in the middle overs and limited any acceleration at the death.
Sri Lanka responded with a confident and calculated chase. Their top order dominated the target and crossed the finish line in 17 overs. The team lost only one wicket during the chase and maintained control throughout the innings. The victory provided the momentum Sri Lanka desperately needed after two early defeats.
Sri Lanka fielded a strong lineup that included Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis, Kamil Mishara, Kusal Perera, Janith Liyanage, Dasun Shanaka, Pawan Rathnayake, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dushmantha Chameera, Mahesh Theekshana and Ishan Malinga. They displayed improved coordination and intent in all departments.
Zimbabwe entered the match with a squad featuring Brian Bennett, Tadiwanashe Marumani, Brendan Taylor, Ryan Burl, Sikandar Raza, Dion Myers, Tashinga Musekiwa, Brad Evans, Tinotenda Maposa, Richard Ngarava and Wellington Masakadza. Their side looked competitive but could not defend their total.
Earlier in the series, Sri Lanka had suffered defeats in both matches, while Zimbabwe secured one win in three games. Pakistan had already qualified for the final after a comprehensive 69-run victory over Zimbabwe two days earlier.
Sri Lanka will now push to build on this strong performance and fight for a place in the Tri-Nation T20 final.
