Spain beats England to be crowned Euro 2024 champions

Spain secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over England in the Euro 2024 final on Sunday, with substitute Mikel Oyarzabal scoring a late winner to clinch their fourth UEFA European Championship title.

The match, held at the Olympiastadion in Berlin, marked Spain’s return to prominence on the international stage and dashed England’s hopes of winning their first major title in nearly six decades.

Despite losing influential midfielder Rodri to injury at half-time, Spain took the lead within two minutes of the restart. Nico Williams, assisted by fellow winger Lamine Yamal, scored to give Spain the advantage. England, known for their resilience throughout the tournament, equalized in the 73rd minute. Substitute Cole Palmer, who had just entered the game, drove in the equalizer after a pass from Bukayo Saka.

However, Spain’s determination proved stronger as Oyarzabal, the Real Sociedad forward, converted a cross from Marc Cucurella in the 86th minute, securing Spain’s record fourth European Championship crown. This victory adds to their previous titles in 1964, 2008, and 2012, and follows their 2010 World Cup triumph, marking a resurgence of the Spanish footballing golden era.

Spain’s victory showcased their dominance throughout the tournament and their ability to remain unfazed by the hostile atmosphere at the Olympiastadion, where a majority of the crowd supported England. England, aiming to end their long wait for a men’s international title since the 1966 World Cup, fell short in their first final on foreign soil and became the first team to lose back-to-back Euro finals.

Captain Harry Kane, still searching for his first major trophy at 30, faced disappointment after a season without silverware with Bayern Munich. Spain, despite Rodri’s injury, controlled the game effectively, with England’s attempts to stage a comeback thwarted by Spain’s defense, including a crucial clearance off the line by Dani Olmo to deny Marc Guehi.

As Spain celebrates their Euro 2024 triumph, the focus shifts to whether this new generation, led by the talented Yamal, can replicate the success of their illustrious predecessors.
