Saim Ayub, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Haris Rauf Named to ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year 2024

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the 2024 Men’s One Day International (ODI) Team of the Year, featuring Pakistani stars Saim Ayub, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Haris Rauf. The ICC highlighted that this year’s team not only boasts exceptional quality but also a remarkable balance of star power, consistency, and versatility.

Saim Ayub’s selection comes after a standout year where he showcased impressive form. With 515 runs from nine matches, including three centuries and one half-century, Saim has made a significant impact at the top of the order. The ICC noted his breakout season, with a striking average of 64.37 and a strike rate of 105.53. His journey saw him score a remarkable 125 runs from three ODIs in Australia and then followed up with his maiden ODI ton in Zimbabwe. Saim’s consistency shone through, with three centuries in his last five innings, including two in South Africa, where he averaged 78.3.

Shaheen Shah Afridi’s inclusion was also well-deserved, despite playing just six ODIs in the calendar year. With 15 wickets at an impressive average of 17.6 and a best bowling figure of 4/47, Shaheen continued to prove himself as one of the world’s top bowlers. His consistency and ability to produce match-winning performances were key highlights.

Haris Rauf rounded off the Pakistani contingent in the ICC’s ODI Team of the Year. In eight matches, Haris claimed 13 wickets at a solid average of 22.4, with his best performance being 5/29. He ended 2024 on a high, taking 10 wickets across Pakistan’s three-ODI series in Australia, which included his memorable five-for in Adelaide during a dominant win for Pakistan.

The rest of the 2024 ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year includes players from Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies, such as Rahmanullah Gurbaz (Afghanistan), Pathum Nissanka (Sri Lanka), Kusal Mendis (WK) (Sri Lanka), Charith Asalanka (C) (Sri Lanka), Sherfane Rutherford (West Indies), Azmatullah Omarzai (Afghanistan), Wanindu Hasaranga (Sri Lanka), and AM Ghazanfar (Afghanistan).

The announcement underscores the depth and talent on the international cricket stage, with Pakistan’s trio playing a crucial role in shaping the year’s outstanding performances.
