PCB Chief Naqvi Confirms England Test Series Will Be Held in Pakistan

England Test Series

LAHORE: On Saturday, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi addressed concerns about the upcoming three-match Test series against England, firmly stating that the matches will indeed take place in Pakistan.

Reports had suggested that the series could be disrupted due to ongoing construction work at major stadiums in the country, potentially leading to the relocation of matches.

However, Naqvi reassured that no Tests would be played outside Pakistan, confirming that Multan and Rawalpindi will serve as the venues.

During his visit to the Gaddafi Stadium, where he was overseeing renovation work, Naqvi dismissed rumors regarding venue changes and reiterated that the series will proceed as planned.

The matches are scheduled for October 7-11 in Multan, October 15-19 in Karachi, and October 24-28 in Rawalpindi. Despite earlier speculation that the Karachi Test might be moved to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Naqvi clarified that both Multan and Rawalpindi are finalized locations.

The controversy surrounding the venues arose earlier this week when reports indicated that ongoing construction at key stadiums could force a change in the schedule.

England coach Brendon McCullum had also voiced concerns about the uncertainty, emphasizing the need for clarity on venue locations before finalizing the team selection.

McCullum expressed a desire to know the exact arrangements soon to properly prepare the team for the conditions they will face in Pakistan.

The PCB Chairman’s remarks come after a prolonged period when England had not toured Pakistan due to security concerns, with matches being held in the UAE between 2005 and 2022.

Naqvi also noted that the PCB is in continuous communication with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), ensuring that there are no issues affecting the series.

In addition to addressing the Test series, Naqvi discussed potential changes in captaincy for the Pakistan men’s cricket team.

He stated that decisions regarding team leadership would be made by coaches and selectors, leaving these matters to their discretion.

Reports have suggested Mohammad Rizwan as a potential new captain, and a workshop is scheduled for September 22 to gather suggestions and finalize decisions.

Naqvi also touched upon the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025, confirming that Pakistan will host the tournament despite uncertainties about India’s participation.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is currently seeking government approval for its team to visit Pakistan. Naqvi mentioned ongoing discussions with BCCI Secretary and assured that Pakistan is committed to hosting the event.

Finally, Naqvi addressed concerns about Jay Shah’s appointment as ICC Chairman, noting that there are no issues with his new role.

He mentioned the upcoming Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting, which will be attended by Salman Nasir in his place. The meeting is set to finalize matters related to the ACC’s new president.

Overall, Naqvi’s statements reaffirm Pakistan’s commitment to hosting international cricket events and managing its cricketing affairs amidst various challenges and changes.
