Pakistan Cricket Board Replaces Alia Rasheed with Sami ul Haq Burney as Media Director

The media leadership of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has changed as Alia Rasheed stepped down from her position as media director and Sami ul Haq Burney was reinstated in her place.

Alia Rasheed, a seasoned sports journalist, tendered her resignation on Friday, citing personal reasons. However, sources suggest that interference in her department could have contributed to her decision. One area of contention was reportedly the appointment of former Punjab Minister Amir Mir as Chairman Mohsin Naqvi’s media consultant.

In October of last year, Alia Rasheed made history as the first woman to assume the role of media director on the board. Her successor, Burney, has previous experience in this position, having served as the PCB’s media director from 2019 to 2023. He has also held leadership positions in the media department at the International Cricket Council and has a background as a journalist.

In other cricketing news, Australia’s Claire Polosak is poised to make history as she takes on the role of on-field umpire for all eight white-ball matches between the women’s cricket teams of Pakistan and West Indies in Karachi.

Scheduled from April 18 to May 3 at the National Bank Stadium, these matches are expected to showcase talent and sportsmanship. The arrival of the West Indies women’s cricket team in Karachi on April 14 will kickstart the series, featuring three ODIs and five T20Is. Notably, the ODIs are part of the ICC Women’s Championship 2022-25, adding significance to the series.

Ali Naqvi, a former Test batter and esteemed member of the PCB and ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, will oversee the playing control team for the ODI series, ensuring adherence to cricketing standards. Muhammad Javed, another esteemed official from the PCB and ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, will fulfill a similar role for the T20I series.

Polosak will be joined by a distinguished panel of umpires, including members from both the ICC and PCB Elite Panel of Umpires, reflecting the commitment to maintaining a fair and competitive environment for the matches.
