Neeraj Chopra’s mother gives a befitting reply to a query about Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem

Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra seized the gold medal in a remarkable show of sportsmanship, marking him as the first Indian to accomplish this feat at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s eminent javelin thrower, Arshad Nadeem, proudly secured a silver medal for his nation.

Despite the goodwill, an Indian journalist endeavored to diminish the celebration into a contentious rivalry between the two countries by posing an inflammatory question about the significance of Neeraj’s victory over the Pakistani athlete.

Neeraj’s mother, Saroj Devi, firmly educated the reporter for attempting to politicize her son’s achievement. Her response resonated globally as she stated, “There is no division of countries on the field; all players are equal.” She further underlined, “In the field, everyone is an athlete, and someone has to win; it doesn’t matter if they are from Pakistan or from Haryana. It is a matter of joy for me, and I am happy for the Pakistani athlete as well.”

However, the heartwarming camaraderie off the field between Neeraj and Arshad consistently defied geopolitical tensions. During the Tokyo Olympics final in 2021, Neeraj supported Arshad when the Pakistani athlete encountered controversy for practicing with Neeraj’s javelin. Neeraj clarified that this practice adhered to the rules and cautioned against using his name to promote a divisive agenda.

Their sportsmanship persisted at the Budapest World Championships, where Neeraj invited Nadeem to join him for a photo opportunity, sending a potent message of unity and sports transcending borders.

In a world frequently fragmented by politics and conflict, athletes’ achievements and camaraderie like Neeraj Chopra and Arshad Nadeem remind us that the spirit of sports can nurture friendship and dismantle barriers, offering a glimmer of hope for a more tranquil and united future
