Former Pakistani cricketer Kamran Akmal has issued an apology to the Sikh community for his derogatory remarks made during a live TV cricket show.

In a social media post on X, he expressed deep regret for his recent comments and extended a sincere apology to Harbhajan Singh and the Sikh community.

The incident occurred during an ARY News cricket show hosted by journalist Waseem Badami, where Akmal, along with Basit Ali and Shahid Hashmi, served as panelists.

During the discussion about India’s decision to give the final over to fast bowler Arshdeep Singh in the high-stakes T20 World Cup match between Pakistan and India in New York, Akmal and Hashmi made lewd jokes about the Sikh community.

The remarks sparked widespread condemnation from the Sikh community, including former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh, who criticized Akmal and urged him to educate himself on history before making such offensive comments.

Acknowledging his mistake, Akmal admitted that his choice of words was inappropriate and disrespectful.

He emphasized his profound respect for Sikhs worldwide and clarified that he never intended to cause harm or offense.

He expressed genuine remorse for his actions and reiterated his apology to the Sikh community.

This incident underscores the importance of sensitivity and respect in public discourse, particularly when discussing sensitive topics related to religion and communities.

Akmal’s apology serves as a reminder of the responsibility that public figures carry in promoting tolerance and understanding.

Moving forward, it is hoped that such incidents will prompt greater awareness and cultural sensitivity among individuals, fostering an environment of mutual respect and appreciation for diverse communities.
