Spanish lawmaker Montero
Spanish Member of the European Parliament Irene Montero sharply criticised US President Donald Trump during a heated debate on the war involving Iran at the European Parliament.
During her speech, Montero challenged Trump on the military campaign and said political leaders should send their own children to the battlefield rather than those of ordinary citizens. She added that Spain wants its young people to stay safe at home rather than become involved in foreign conflicts.
Her remarks triggered mixed reactions inside the chamber. Some lawmakers applauded her comments, while others walked out in protest during the speech.
Montero also strongly criticised the broader military strategy of the United States and its allies in the Middle East, arguing that repeated military interventions have failed to bring stability to the region.
Call to reconsider Spainโs NATO membership
The Spanish politician went further by calling for Spain to reconsider its membership in NATO. According to Montero, the allianceโs military policies increase global tensions rather than improving international security.
She argued that current global security threats are linked to military interventions led by the United States and Israel, and urged European leaders to pursue diplomatic solutions instead of armed conflict.
Montero also criticised Western bombing campaigns in several Middle Eastern countries. She said military operations carried out over the past decades had not succeeded in delivering the freedoms they claimed to promote.
Referring to conflicts in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, she argued that military force had failed to improve the situation for civilians and had instead deepened instability.
Her speech highlighted growing divisions within European political circles about the war involving Iran and the role of Western military alliances in global security matters.
