Spain has officially withdrawn its ambassador from Israel, marking a significant escalation in diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
The decision was announced after Spain published an official notice terminating the ambassador’s position. The development reflects the worsening political dispute between Madrid and Israel.
Relations between the two nations have been under strain for months. Disagreements have intensified over Spain’s criticism of military actions involving Israel and the United States against Iran.
Spain had already recalled its ambassador last September during an earlier diplomatic row. The ambassador had been summoned back to Madrid following disputes related to Spain’s policies toward Israel’s military operations.
With the latest announcement, the withdrawal has now become permanent.
Dispute Began Over Gaza War and Arms Transit Restrictions
Tensions between Spain and Israel initially escalated during Israel’s military campaign in the Gaza Strip.
Spain introduced measures restricting the use of its ports and airspace for aircraft and ships carrying weapons to Israel. The policy was intended to prevent military equipment shipments during the conflict.
Israeli officials strongly criticized the move. Gideon Sa’ar, Israel’s foreign minister, condemned Spain’s decision and accused the Spanish government of acting unfairly toward Israel.
The disagreement quickly developed into a wider diplomatic dispute. Both countries began recalling their ambassadors and exchanging sharp public statements.
The growing tensions reflected deeper political differences regarding the conflict in Gaza and broader Middle East policy.
Embassies Now Led by Chargé d’Affaires
Following the latest decision, Spain’s embassy in Tel Aviv will now be led by a chargé d’affaires rather than a full ambassador.
A spokesperson for Spain’s foreign ministry confirmed that this arrangement will remain in place for the foreseeable future.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries have been significantly downgraded as a result.
Israel has taken similar steps in response to Spain’s policies. Israel previously recalled its ambassador from Spain after Madrid announced recognition of a Palestinian state.
As a result, Israel’s embassy in Spain is also currently managed by a chargé d’affaires.
Diplomatic experts say such arrangements often indicate serious political disagreements between countries.
Middle East Conflict Adds New Pressure to Relations
The diplomatic rift has intensified further amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.
Spain has openly criticized the military strikes carried out against Iran. Spanish officials have urged restraint and called for diplomatic solutions instead of military escalation.
These positions have drawn criticism from Israeli leaders. Earlier this month, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar accused Spain of supporting authoritarian regimes for opposing the war.
Political analysts say the diplomatic relationship between Spain and Israel is now at one of its lowest points in decades.
The long-standing partnership has been overshadowed by disagreements over Middle East policies and the Gaza conflict that began in October 2023.
Experts believe it may take significant diplomatic efforts from both sides to repair the relationship.
For now, embassies in both countries will continue operating with limited diplomatic representation while tensions remain high.
