Spain has banned US military planes from using its airspace. These planes are taking part in attacks on Iran, according to Spanish newspaper El País.
The decision was reported on Monday. It cited military sources. It goes further than Spain’s earlier refusal to allow the US to use its jointly-operated military bases. The ban does not apply in emergency situations.
The Spanish Ministry of Defence has not yet commented on the report.
Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo explained the move during a radio interview. “This decision is part of the government’s stand. It does not want to participate in or contribute to a war that was started unilaterally and against international law,” he said.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has been one of the strongest critics of the US and Israeli strikes on Iran. He has called them reckless and illegal.
President Donald Trump has already threatened to cut trade ties with Madrid. This came after Spain refused to let the US use its bases for the war.
