South Africa won a tough match by 16 runs against Pakistan in the second ODI of the ICC Womenโs Championship series at SuperSport Park. This win has given the Proteas a 2-1 lead in the series, with one match left to be played. Pakistan fought hard, especially while chasing a huge total of 361.
Strong Opening Sets South Africa on Track
Electing to bat first, South Africa relied on openers Laura Wolvaardt and Tasmin Brits to build momentum. Wolvaardt scored a steady 20, while Brits dominated with 77 off 62 balls. Their partnership gave the team a solid start. Sune Luus added stability with 57 runs, but Annerie Dercksen stole the show. She smashed 90 off 68 balls, including six fours and four sixes. Her partnership with Luus set a strong platform. Nadine de Klerkโs late cameo, highlighted by a massive 90-metre six, pushed South Africaโs total to a challenging 360.
Pakistanโs Fightback Falls Short
Pakistan began their chase with early setbacks, losing two wickets for just 24 runs, including Muneeba dismissed by Dercksen. A resilient third-wicket stand of 97 between Sadaf Shamas and Ayesha Zafar steadied the innings. Zafar scored a composed 75, while Shamas contributed 61. Captain Fatima Sana added 52 off 36 balls, raising the intensity. Despite their efforts, Pakistan struggled with 30 extras and 24 wides. They were bowled out for 345 in the penultimate over, just short of the target.
South Africa celebrated a well-deserved win, showing the strength of their batting lineup and good match temperament. The teams will proceed to Durban for the final ODI on Sunday. Pakistan will look to end the series on a positive note, while South Africa will look to continue their dominance.
