Sony has officially raised the prices of its PlayStation 5 lineup in the United States, marking the first major adjustment since the console’s launch in November 2020. The revised pricing now places the standard disc-equipped PlayStation 5 at $549.99, while the Digital Edition has climbed to $499.99.
The premium PlayStation 5 Pro, which debuted in late 2024 with enhanced processing power and advanced visual capabilities, now retails at $749.99, making it the most expensive mainstream gaming console currently available on the market.
When the PS5 first launched, the disc version carried a $499 price tag, while the Digital Edition was offered at $399. With the latest increases, both of the core PS5 models are now $50 more expensive than their original launch prices, highlighting a gradual but clear upward trend in console pricing.
The PS5 Pro, meanwhile, continues to sit at the top of Sony’s hardware portfolio, offering higher frame rates, improved ray tracing, and enhanced support for 4K gaming, positioning it as the company’s flagship console for hardcore gamers.
The price hike reflects a broader industry trend, as Sony is not the only major gaming company adjusting costs. Earlier in the year, Microsoft raised the prices of its Xbox Series X and Series S consoles.
In addition, Microsoft introduced a $729 version of the Xbox Series X featuring 2TB of internal storage, signaling a shift across the industry towards higher pricing for premium gaming hardware.
Notably, Sony has kept peripheral pricing unchanged. The optional external PS5 disc drive remains available for $79.99, while other accessories, including controllers and headsets, continue to sell at their existing price points.
With PS5 consoles now widely available at major US retailers, the company appears focused on maximizing value from a stable supply chain while reinforcing its positioning in the premium segment of the gaming market.
