Rumours of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s death have resurfaced on social media, prompting concern and speculation about his condition and whereabouts. The PTI founder, who has been incarcerated at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi for over two years, is serving a 14-year sentence in multiple cases, including corruption.
Unverified claims began circulating after an account on X, named Afghanistan Times, alleged that the 72-year-old had been “mysteriously killed” and that his body had been removed from the prison. Thousands of supporters were reportedly trying to gain access to the jail to confirm the former PM’s status.
Another social media account, “Ministry of Foreign Affairs Baluchistan,” shared a purported image of Khan on a stretcher, claiming he had been killed by Field Marshal Asim Munir and the ISI. No credible news source has verified the image or the claims, but hashtags related to Khan’s alleged death quickly gained traction.
This is not the first time such rumours have spread. Earlier this year, a fake government document claiming Khan had died in custody circulated widely, prompting the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to denounce it as false.
The renewed rumours coincide with allegations from Khan’s sisters that they have been denied access to him for weeks. Noreen Niazi, Aleema Khanum, and Dr. Uzma Khan staged protests outside Adiala Jail after being prevented from meeting him, claiming they were manhandled and violently detained by security forces.
Niazi submitted a formal complaint to the Punjab Inspector General of Police, describing the incident as orchestrated and brutal. She alleged that other women were slapped and dragged during the protest and that officials had misused police power to suppress legitimate political expression.
Khan himself has described harsh conditions during imprisonment, including solitary confinement in a 9-by-11-foot cell with no access to books or newspapers.
In July, he instructed his party members to hold the Pakistan Army chief accountable if anything happened to him, citing mistreatment while in custody. Despite the rumours and protests, there is no verified evidence to suggest that Khan has been harmed or moved from Adiala Jail.
