Six police officers from North Waziristan were injured on Monday when armed men opened fire on a police vehicle near Mamash Khel town in Bannu District, officials confirmed.
According to Bannu Regional Police Officer (RPO) Sajjad Khan, the attack occurred on Miranshah Road, a key route connecting Bannu with North Waziristan. The vehicle targeted in the attack belonged to the District Police Officer (DPO) of North Waziristan.
RPO Khan stated that while six officers sustained injuries, the DPO himself remained unhurt. The injured personnel were immediately transported to Bannu District Headquarters Hospital for treatment. Their current condition has not been disclosed in detail.
“The armed men opened fire at the DPO’s vehicle,” RPO Khan explained, adding that the attackers fled the scene and are believed to be hiding in nearby areas. Authorities have launched a search operation to track and apprehend the perpetrators.
The incident underscores ongoing security challenges in North Waziristan and surrounding districts, which have experienced periodic attacks on law enforcement personnel despite ongoing counterterrorism efforts. Security forces in the region have maintained a heightened state of alert to prevent similar incidents.
Local officials emphasized that the police are coordinating closely with law enforcement units across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to ensure the attackers are brought to justice. Checkpoints along the Miranshah-Bannu route have been reinforced, and intelligence teams are gathering information on the identities and affiliations of the gunmen.
Residents of Mamash Khel and surrounding areas have been advised to remain cautious while authorities continue operations to neutralize any remaining threats. The attack has raised concerns over the safety of police convoys in the region, prompting calls for increased security measures and support for law enforcement officers on duty in high-risk areas.
Authorities have also urged the public to assist by providing any information that could help in the investigation. Further updates are expected as the search operation progresses and the condition of the injured officers is monitored.
