KARACHI: Six Afghan robbers belonging to an Afghan gang were shot dead in a police encounter in Karachi’s Pak Colony on Thursday. Two police personnel also sustained injuries, according to police officials.
Police launched the operation after receiving intelligence about the presence of an armed robbery gang involved in repeated criminal activity across the area.
Consequently, the incident triggered heightened security measures and prompted senior officers to oversee developments on the ground.
Operation targets notorious robbery gang
According to SSP Keamari Amjad Shaikh, police initiated a targeted operation against a gang believed to be involved in multiple street crimes and house robberies. As officers advanced, the suspects opened fire, which led to an intense exchange of gunshots.
Police responded immediately and, after a prolonged encounter, killed six Afghan gangsters at the scene. Meanwhile, the checkpost in charge and another policeman suffered injuries during the gunbattle. Rescue teams shifted both police officials to a nearby hospital for medical treatment, where doctors described their condition as stable.
Police recovered an assault rifle and other weapons from the suspects. Furthermore, authorities called in additional contingents to secure the locality and prevent any further unrest. Officers cordoned off the area and conducted a thorough search to ensure that no accomplices escaped.
Investigation and identification process underway
Police transported the bodies of the deceased suspects to Civil Hospital Karachi for medico-legal formalities. Officials have also started the identification process and are verifying the suspectsโ criminal records through national databases. SSP Shaikh stated that the killed suspects were allegedly involved in a recent house robbery in which three brothers lost their lives.
Therefore, investigators are examining possible links between this gang and other unsolved crimes in the district.
Authorities have assured the public that they will share further details after completing legal procedures. Meanwhile, police leadership reiterated its commitment to continue operations against criminal networks to improve security across Karachi.
