Utility stores in Lahore are facing severe shortages of essential items such as flour, sugar, ghee, rice, pulses, and gram flour, causing significant difficulties for low and middle-income families preparing for Ramazan shopping. The disruption in the supply system has left many consumers frustrated, as these items have become increasingly difficult to find.
The shortage has persisted for the past six months, with customers experiencing long queues and empty shelves at several utility stores. According to store managers, the lack of supply is due to the government’s failure to deliver the required goods, leaving them unable to meet customer demand.
One store manager shared that, despite their best efforts, they have been unable to provide essential products to customers, forcing many to turn to local markets. However, the prices in these markets have surged, putting additional financial strain on low-income families already struggling to make ends meet.
The situation has sparked criticism of the utility store administration for failing to restore regular supply chains. Employees of the stores have expressed regret over the hardships faced by the public, lamenting the operational disarray.
In response to the ongoing issue, a visit from the Managing Director (MD) of utility stores is expected, with some stores attempting to fill their shelves by sourcing goods directly from the market. However, it remains to be seen whether this will provide any lasting relief to the affected consumers.
