ISLAMABAD: Pakistan cricket team’s disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup 2026 may prompt the cricket decision makers to replace skipper Salman Ali Agha with a strong candidate like Shadab Khan.
Former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik has revealed discussions over removing Salman Ali Agha from the T20 captaincy following Pakistan’s disappointing World Cup performance. He indicated that Shadab Khan has emerged as a potential replacement amid growing criticism of Agha’s leadership.
Speaking during a television appearance, Malik said Shadab’s name had resurfaced for the role. He added that selectors had previously considered Shadab for captaincy but postponed the decision due to his injury. Meanwhile, critics have questioned Agha’s performance, citing both tactical shortcomings and limited personal contributions with the bat.
Criticism Mounts Over Leadership Record
Former Test cricketer Basit Ali highlighted Pakistan’s frequent leadership changes in recent years. He noted that Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Shadab Khan had all captained the side before selectors handed the responsibility to Agha.
However, Basit urged caution. He pointed out that Shadab led Pakistan in a series defeat against Afghanistan, which he described as a setback against a comparatively weaker side.
In addition, former wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal strongly criticized Agha’s record as captain. Across 12 matches in the Asia Cup and World Cup combined, Agha’s highest score remained 32. Akmal argued that a captain must lead from the front and deliver consistent performances under pressure.
Questions Over Shadab’s Form
At the same time, sports analyst Najeeb Al-Hussain expressed skepticism about the reports. He suggested that authorities may have floated Shadab’s name to gauge public reaction rather than confirm a final decision.
Furthermore, Shadab’s own World Cup form has drawn scrutiny. He managed only five wickets in four matches while conceding 93 runs, raising concerns about his readiness for leadership.
