Former Pakistani all-rounder Shahid Afridi has joined the esteemed roster of ambassadors for the ICC Menโs T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and West Indies, commencing on June 1.
Afridi expressed his sentiments, stating, โThe ICC Menโs T20 World Cup is an event that is very close to my heart,โ as quoted in the ICC statement on Friday. Alongside other iconic figures like Yuvraj Singh, Chris Gayle, and Usain Bolt, Afridi will contribute to the event’s promotion and provide expert insights through guest columns.
Having participated in six T20 World Cups, Afridi notably led Pakistan to victory in 2009, earning the Player of the Match title in the final at Lordโs. Excited about this edition, Afridi emphasized the growing prominence of T20 World Cups, anticipating more teams, matches, and drama than ever before.
“I am particularly thrilled about witnessing the India versus Pakistan fixture on 9 June. It stands as one of the greatest rivalries in sport, and New York will provide the perfect stage for this eagerly anticipated encounter between two formidable teams.”
Claire Furlong, the ICC’s general manager for marketing and communications, stated, “Shahid Afridi has competed in six ICC Menโs T20 World Cups, captaining in two and delivering a Player of the Match performance during the 2009 victory, making him an ideal addition to our esteemed Ambassador team.”
She described Afridi as a “fan favorite” and highlighted his role in bringing fans closer to the event.
The T20 World Cup is scheduled from 1-29 June, with the USA and Canada facing off in the opening match at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas. Across nine venues, a total of 55 matches will be played by 20 teams, culminating in the final on 29 June in Barbados, promising to be the grandest cricket carnival spectacle ever.
