ISLAMABAD: An unusually sharp drop in temperatures is expected across Pakistan over the next few days as a severe cold wave tightens its grip on most regions, authorities warned on Wednesday. The National Disaster Management Authority said the cold spell will affect all four provinces, along with Gilgit-Baltistan and other upper areas, intensifying already harsh winter conditions.
Northern and western regions face extreme chill
According to an NDMA alert, extreme cold conditions are persisting in Gilgit-Baltistan, while freezing weather is likely to prevail in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northern Balochistan and the Potohar region. As temperatures continue to fall, the authority warned of increased health risks, particularly respiratory illnesses, and potential damage to standing crops.
The NDMA cautioned that temperatures in Quetta, Ziarat and Kalat could drop further in the coming days. Consequently, residents in these areas may face heightened exposure to severe cold, especially during nighttime and early morning hours. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department said dense fog may develop in the plains of Punjab and upper Sindh, potentially disrupting road traffic and daily activities.
Karachi braces for colder nights
The PMD also advised Karachi residents to prepare for colder conditions, as cold northeasterly winds are blowing across the city. Officials said the minimum temperature could fall to between 10 and 11 degrees Celsius from Thursday night. Furthermore, temperatures may dip into single digits over the weekend, with the mercury possibly touching 9 degrees Celsius on Saturday and Sunday nights.
Weather data showed Leh as the coldest location on Wednesday, recording minus 11 degrees Celsius. Ziarat reported minus 9, Astore minus 8, and Kalat and Kalam minus 7 degrees. Skardu recorded minus 6, while Gupis saw minus 5 degrees. Hunza, Malam Jabba, Parachinar, Quetta and Nathia Gali each recorded minus 4 degrees Celsius.
Both the NDMA and PMD urged citizens to take precautionary measures, wear warm clothing, and ensure special care for children, elderly people and those with health conditions.
