ISLAMABAD: Seven more individuals have been charged for allegedly engaging in anti-state propaganda and spreading false narratives on social media platforms.
The accused, identified as Muhammad Sohail, Muhammad Junaid, Sheikh Muhammad Ehsan, and others, are alleged to have used platforms like WhatsApp and X (formerly Twitter) to disseminate propaganda. Authorities have stated that efforts are underway to apprehend the suspects.
Recent Crackdown
This follows a similar move a day earlier when cases were registered against 12 individuals for similar offenses. Their identities have also been confirmed, according to sources.
Legal Framework Tightened
The government of Pakistan is amending the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) to combat the spread of false information and fearmongering on social media. The proposed changes include stricter penalties, such as fines and imprisonment, for individuals found guilty of spreading misinformation or targeting state institutions.
Key Features of PECA Amendment
- Content Removal: Any material targeting national institutions, individuals, or spreading fear will be removed in Pakistan.
- Digital Rights Protection Authority (DRPA): A draft proposal includes establishing the DRPA to oversee and regulate social media content, with powers to block or remove harmful material.
- Penalties: Offenders spreading false information or promoting hatred against the state and its institutions may face up to 5 years in prison, a fine of up to Rs 1 million, or both.
These developments reflect the governmentโs increasing efforts to regulate online spaces and curb the dissemination of harmful content targeting state institutions.
