A bomb concealed in an electric scooter killed a senior Russian general overseeing nuclear protection forces in Moscow on Tuesday, Russia’s Investigative Committee confirmed.
Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, head of Russia’s Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Protection Troops, was killed alongside his assistant near an apartment building on Ryazansky Prospekt, located approximately 7 kilometers (4 miles) southeast of the Kremlin.
“Igor Kirillov, chief of the radiation, chemical, and biological protection forces of the Russian Federation’s armed forces, and his assistant were killed,” the Investigative Committee stated.
Images shared on Russian Telegram channels depicted a shattered building entrance scattered with debris and two bodies lying in blood-stained snow.
Authorities have opened a criminal investigation into the incident.
Russia’s Radiation, Chemical, and Biological Defense Troops (RKhBZ) specialize in operating under conditions of radioactive, chemical, and biological contamination.
