ISLAMABAD: Spotify experienced a widespread outage on 16 April, leaving thousands of users unable to access the streaming platform. While some speculated the disruption could be the result of a cyberattack, the company confirmed the issue was technical and not a security breach.
The outage, which affected users worldwide, led to more than 48,000 reports on DownDetector, a service that tracks online disruptions. The incident occurred just days after the controversial message board 4chan suffered a high-profile hack, fueling speculation that Spotify may have been targeted. However, the company quickly dismissed those claims.
“We are aware of the outage and working to resolve it as soon as possible. Reports of this being a security hack are false,” Spotify stated via its @SpotifyStatus account on X (formerly Twitter). The issue was resolved later the same day, with services fully restored.
Spotify, which boasts over 675 million users globally, did not disclose the technical cause of the outage but assured users that its systems remained secure. In a follow-up message, the company thanked users for their patience and directed those still experiencing issues to its support team.
This marks one of the few major disruptions Spotify has faced in recent years, though the company has maintained a strong track record of uptime. The brief outage highlights the platform’s critical role in daily entertainment for millions of listeners worldwide.
