Snapchat Unveils Footsteps: A New Feature to Track Location History

Snapchat

Snapchat is set to roll out its new “Footsteps” feature to all iOS users this week, transitioning from its initial availability solely for Snapchat+ subscribers.

This exciting development was confirmed by the company on Monday and marks a significant enhancement to the Snapchat experience.

According to a report by TechCrunch, the Footsteps feature utilizes Snap Map to track users’ travels, showcasing how much of the world they have explored.

When users first activate Footsteps, the feature accesses data from their Snaps saved in Memories to calculate their past travel activity.

This initial setup allows the application to create a historical overview of where users have been, laying the groundwork for ongoing tracking.

After this initial data pull, Footsteps relies on real-time location data, allowing for personalized travel footprints to be displayed on the map.

For users interested in utilizing the Footsteps feature, it’s essential to note that Snap Map’s Ghost Mode must be disabled.

However, privacy is a priority for Snapchat, and Footsteps is set to be private by default. This means that only the user will have access to view their tracked movements, ensuring a sense of security and control over personal data.

Users can also choose to turn off tracking or delete their travel data at any time through their profile settings, providing flexibility and user empowerment.

Snapchat’s efforts to enhance Snap Map distinguish it from competitors like Instagram and TikTok, both of which currently do not offer a similar feature.

However, Instagram has indicated that it is developing a “Friends Map,” which could bring a competitive edge to its platform.

As Snapchat continues to innovate with features like Footsteps, it demonstrates its commitment to providing a unique user experience that fosters exploration and sharing among friends.

Additionally, Snapchat has confirmed that the Footsteps feature will soon be available for Android users, expanding access to a wider audience and further solidifying its position in the social media landscape.

This strategic move is likely to attract more users seeking a comprehensive travel tracking solution within their social media experience, ultimately enhancing user engagement and satisfaction.
