Pakistan is set to launch its first locally produced four-wheeled electric vehicle (EV) in December, marking a significant step forward in the country’s automotive industry. The announcement was made during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif on the promotion and use of EVs in Pakistan.
According to an official statement, the meeting revealed that since 2022, the government has issued 49 licenses for the local production of two- and three-wheeled electric vehicles.
Of these, 25 factories have already commenced production. The first license for the domestic production of four-wheeled electric vehicles was granted in September 2024, and the first locally produced electric car is scheduled to hit the market by the end of this year.
This development is seen as a major milestone in Pakistan’s push toward electric mobility, which holds the potential to transform the country’s automotive landscape.
In related news, Dewan Farooque Motors Limited (DFML) announced earlier this week that it has started producing electric vehicles at its assembly plant after receiving approval from the Engineering Development Board (EDB).
This marks an important moment for the company and signals the beginning of a new era for electric vehicles in Pakistan.
Meanwhile, the Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD recently declared its entry into the Pakistani market, further highlighting the growing interest and investment in electric mobility within the country.
During the meeting, PM Shahbaz Sharif instructed the concerned authorities to present a comprehensive financial model for EVs. He highlighted that electric vehicles would not only help save foreign exchange by reducing reliance on petrol and diesel but also offer significant environmental benefits.
The Prime Minister also directed officials to finalize the Electric Vehicles policy by November, ensuring improvements in the licensing regulations related to EV manufacturing in Pakistan. He emphasized the need for consultations with provincial governments, federal agencies, and other stakeholders to develop a well-rounded EV policy.
In a move similar to the government’s laptop distribution scheme, PM Sharif announced plans to provide high-performing students in government schools with E-motorbikes.
Additionally, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has been tasked with drafting a comprehensive plan to electrify public transport in Islamabad.
Efforts are also underway to establish recharge stations for electric vehicles along major routes, including motorways, the GT Road (National Highway), N-65, and N-70.
The power ministry has already drafted standards for these EV charging stations, and the government is exploring the option of offering affordable electricity rates to support the initiative.
