OpenAI Launches Text-to-Video Model Sora for ChatGPT Plus and Pro Users

OpenAI announced on Monday the official release of its text-to-video model, Sora, for ChatGPT Plus and Pro users, marking an important step in the company’s expansion into multimodal AI technologies.

Sora, which was initially introduced in February but was limited to safety testers during its research preview phase, is now available to a broader audience. The AI model allows users to generate videos directly from text input. OpenAI plans to compete with other companies offering similar text-to-video capabilities, such as Meta, Google’s Alphabet, and Stability AI’s Stable Video Diffusion.

This version of Sora, named Sora Turbo, is available to ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers at no additional charge. OpenAI also mentioned that it is working on a tailored pricing structure for various user types, which will be introduced early next year.

Users can generate videos with a maximum resolution of 1080p, lasting up to 20 seconds, and available in widescreen, vertical, or square aspect ratios. However, Sora will not be accessible in the EU, Switzerland, or the UK at this time. The tool will be available in other regions where ChatGPT is present.

OpenAI emphasized its commitment to preventing misuse of the model. The company has implemented restrictions to block harmful content such as child sexual abuse materials and sexual deepfakes. Initially, uploads featuring people will be limited, but OpenAI plans to expand this feature as it refines its deepfake mitigation measures.

Sora’s launch represents a significant step in OpenAI’s effort to enhance the capabilities of its AI systems, bringing users closer to fully interactive multimodal AI experiences.
