OpenAI CTO Mira Murati and several key executives depart from ChatGPT creator

Mira Murati, the former chief technology officer of OpenAI, announced her departure from the company on Wednesday, marking a significant change within the organization.

Murati, who briefly served as interim CEO during a turbulent period last year, expressed her desire to take time for personal exploration in her written statement, describing her decision as “difficult” but necessary.

Following her announcement, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman revealed that two other key executives, Chief Research Officer Bob McGrew and research leader Barret Zoph, would also be leaving. Altman assured employees that these departures were made “independently of each other and amicably,” emphasizing a smooth transition despite the changes.

Murati’s exit, along with those of McGrew and Zoph, continues a trend of high-profile departures from the San Francisco-based tech company. Notably, co-founder John Schulman left in August to join rival firm Anthropic, which was established by former OpenAI leaders.

In addition, Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s president and co-founder, announced he would be on sabbatical until the end of the year. Earlier in May, co-founder Ilya Sutskever, who focused on AI safety, also departed to pursue his own AI venture.

These leadership changes reflect a significant reshaping of OpenAI’s executive team at a critical time for the company, which has been at the forefront of AI development.

The exits highlight both the competitive nature of the AI industry and the evolving landscape of leadership within OpenAI. As the company navigates these transitions, it remains to be seen how these changes will impact its future direction and projects.
