Elon Musk’s social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, now allows adult and not-safe-for-work (NSFW) content following updates to its policies.
TechCrunch reports that X recently added new clauses to its rules, officially permitting users to post consensual adult and graphic content, provided it is clearly labeled.
The platform reassured users that exposure to graphic material will be restricted for children and adult users who opt out of viewing it.
The policy emphasizes that users are prohibited from sharing content that promotes exploitation, non-consent, objectification, sexualization or harm to minors, and obscene behaviors.
“We believe in the autonomy of adults to engage with and create content that reflects their own beliefs, desires, and experiences, including those related to sexuality. We balance this freedom by restricting exposure to adult content for children or adult users who choose not to see it,” states X’s page on “adult content” policies.
This move formalizes an approach towards adult content that was somewhat permissive even before Musk, 52, acquired Twitter in October 2022.
Unlike Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube, Twitter has never expressly banned nudity and sexualized content.
Under Musk’s leadership, X has significantly reduced moderation on the platform and reinstated previously banned accounts.
While Musk argues that he is upholding freedom of speech, critics accuse the Tesla CEO of encouraging hate speech and misinformation.
