Balochi Among 110 New Languages Added to Google Translate

Google Translate

Google’s intra-language translation platform continues its expansive growth, now supporting over 100 languages with the recent inclusion of Balochi, facilitated by advancements in AI and LLMs.

A recent blog post on Google’s official website underscores the pivotal role of Google Translate in enhancing global connectivity, bridging linguistic divides, and fostering cross-cultural understanding.

The platform’s accessibility enhancements are particularly notable, leveraging cutting-edge technologies.

In 2022, Google Translate achieved a significant milestone by adding 24 languages through innovative techniques like Zero-Shot Machine Translation, allowing translations without prior samples.

This approach reflects Google’s commitment to enhancing the user experience and expanding linguistic inclusivity.

The launch of the “1,000 Languages Initiative” reaffirms Google’s dedication to developing AI models that support the world’s most spoken languages.

The latest expansion, encompassing 110 additional languages, marks Google Translate’s most extensive language rollout to date.

This expansion is set to benefit approximately 8% of the global population, encompassing over 614 million speakers across major global languages and indigenous languages undergoing revitalization efforts.

Africa stands out in this update, with 25% of the newly added languages originating from the continent.

Languages such as Fon, Kikongo, Luo, Ga, Swati, Venda, and Wolof are now supported, underscoring Google’s commitment to linguistic diversity and inclusion.

From Afar, a tonal language spoken in Djibouti, Eritrea, and Ethiopia, to Cantonese fulfilling longstanding user demands, the newly supported languages span a wide spectrum.

Additionally, languages like Manx, NKo, Punjabi (Shahmukhi), Tamazight (Amazigh), and Tok Pisin further enrich the language landscape accessible through Google Translate.

Google continues to collaborate closely with linguists and native speakers to refine language variants and adapt to evolving linguistic norms and preferences.

These updates are seamlessly integrated into the Google Translate app on both iOS and Android platforms, facilitating effortless language translation and promoting cross-cultural communication worldwide.

The expansion of Google Translate’s language repertoire underscores its role as a critical tool for global communication, cultural exchange, and accessibility, reflecting Google’s ongoing commitment to advancing language technology for a more connected and inclusive world.
