Renowned folk and Sufi singer Sanam Marvi has spoken out against the online trolling she faces for performing religious pilgrimages such as Umrah and visiting Karbala, calling the criticism unfair and deeply hurtful.
In a candid appearance on private channels morning show, Marvi shared her frustration over how her spiritual practices are constantly scrutinised due to her profession as a singer. She revealed that every time she undertakes a religious journey, she is met with harsh comments on social media.
“People say things like, ‘Now you will also perform Umrah?’ or ‘You just returned from Karbala and now you’re singing again?’” she said.
“Faith Is Personal, Singing Is My Profession,” Says Marvi
Sanam Marvi emphasized that music is her career, while faith is a deeply personal matter. She urged critics to understand that being a singer doesn’t disqualify someone from seeking spiritual fulfillment.
“We are human beings too. Our hearts also desire to perform pilgrimage and seek blessings,” she stated. “Just because I sing doesn’t mean I should be stopped from worshipping.”
The artist noted that most of the criticism comes from social media, where many people view music and religion as mutually exclusive. She called for greater tolerance and respect for artists who choose to observe religious practices, regardless of their professions.
Marvi’s comments have resonated with many fans and fellow artists who face similar backlash. Her message serves as a reminder that faith is not limited by profession, and everyone deserves the freedom to express their spirituality without judgment.
