Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha has provided early insight into how his team may shape up for next year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
Under Salman’s leadership, the side has enjoyed a strong run in the shortest format, including a recent home tri-series victory against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. He indicated that most of the squad from that successful series is likely to feature in the World Cup lineup.
Salman emphasized stability ahead of the tournament, saying, “I don’t think there will be any major changes before the World Cup; this will be the combination.
All players have been given their roles, and we will move forward with these roles.” With six matches remaining before the T20 World Cup, three of which are away against Sri Lanka in January, the captain stressed the importance of consistency rather than making drastic adjustments.
If the squad largely mirrors the tri-series lineup, it bodes well for players such as former skipper Babar Azam and key pacer Naseem Shah, who were recalled following a period of uncertainty over their selection. Salman expressed confidence in the team’s progress, noting that playing together for six months has helped build cohesion and belief.
Looking ahead, Salman shared his ambitious goals for Pakistan cricket. “I want us to win the 2026 T20 World Cup and then the 2027 ODI World Cup. Winning both World Cups is my dream; if it happens, I will be very happy,” he said. He highlighted the Sri Lanka series as an opportunity for new players to gain experience on similar pitches ahead of the World Cup, while senior players can provide guidance.
Salman concluded by acknowledging that while the team is on the right track, there is still room for growth. His focus remains on preparing a balanced, confident squad capable of performing at the highest level, with the ultimate aim of helping Pakistan achieve its first T20 World Cup title since 2009.
