Moscow โ A Russian military transport aircraft crashed in the Crimea region, killing all 29 people on board, Russiaโs Defence Ministry confirmed on Wednesday. Authorities reported that the An-26 aircraft lost contact during a routine flight before crashing into a cliff.
Rescue teams later located the wreckage following a search operation. According to officials, the aircraft carried six crew members and 23 passengers, and no survivors were found. Initial assessments suggest that technical failure likely caused the crash, while authorities ruled out external interference such as missiles or drones.
Investigation Points to Technical Failure
Meanwhile, officials stated that communication with the aircraft ceased around 18:00 local time on Tuesday. Investigators continue to examine the crash site to determine the precise cause. However, early findings indicate mechanical issues rather than hostile action.
The An-26, developed by Antonov, has served primarily as a military transport aircraft since the late 1960s. Despite its long operational history, the model has experienced multiple fatal incidents in recent years, raising concerns about aging fleets.
Regional Tensions Provide Broader Context
Furthermore, the crash occurred against the backdrop of ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, and the region has since remained a focal point of military tensions.
Ukrainian forces have periodically targeted Russian installations in the peninsula. At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly called for Russiaโs withdrawal from Crimea as part of any potential peace settlement.
Although the crash appears unrelated to the conflict, it highlights the risks surrounding military operations in a volatile region.
