Roma Riaz, Pakistan’s Miss Universe 2025 representative, has responded to online criticism claiming she does not look “Pakistani enough.”
“I Won’t Apologise for Looking Like My People”
In an Instagram reel from Thailand, Roma said she would never apologise for her appearance, emphasising pride in her heritage. She noted that much of the criticism stems from colourism, which teaches people to “celebrate fairness and forget their roots.”
She said she is Pakistani “in [her] roots, [her] values, and in every shade of [her] skin.” She added that her complexion mirrors the women who “built our homes, our families, and carried our nation in their hearts.”
Representing a New Generation of South Asian Women
Roma Riaz said she represents both Pakistan and a new generation of South Asian women who reject outdated beauty standards. Switching to Urdu, she asked why Pakistanis criticise their own people while she works to promote the nation positively.
She urged followers to support her efforts, saying, “If you don’t have anything kind to say, stay silent for Pakistan’s reputation.”
Calling Out Colourism and Embracing Heritage
In her message for young girls, she said anyone labelled “too dark, too different, or too bold” still represents Pakistan with pride. Roma also endorsed her decision to wear a sari, calling it “as Pakistani as the shalwar kameez.”
Her participation in the Miss Universe Pakistan 2025 in Thailand, seems to be an encouraging message for young girls, whose ambition is to shine in the life and career.
