Camera-Based Age Checks Rolled Out Worldwide
Roblox has announced a global rollout of mandatory age verification for users who want to access chat and communication features. The move follows growing pressure on the platform after multiple lawsuits raised concerns about child safety and online interactions.
Under the new system, Roblox users must verify their age before using chat, voice, and other communication tools. The verification process requires access to the userโs device camera. Users must complete a guided facial verification process using on-screen instructions within the Roblox app.
Roblox clarified that age verification is not required for basic gameplay. However, it is now compulsory for any user who wants to communicate with others on the platform. The company said the update aims to strengthen age-based safety controls and reduce risks for younger users.
The feature follows earlier trials conducted in select markets. Roblox said the global expansion reflects positive results from those tests and growing demand for stronger child protection measures.
Data Privacy, Facial Scans, and Third-Party Handling
Roblox emphasized that user privacy remains a top priority. All images and videos captured during the verification process are deleted once the check is completed. The company stated that no facial data is stored permanently.
The age verification process is handled by Persona, a third-party identity verification provider. Roblox said Persona processes the facial scan and then deletes the data after verification. The company stressed that neither Roblox nor Persona retains biometric information.
Users aged 13 and above have an alternative option. They can verify their age using an official government-issued ID instead of facial verification. This option is meant to reduce barriers for older users who may not want to use camera-based scans.
If the system incorrectly estimates a userโs age, Roblox allows appeals. Users can request a re-evaluation through ID verification or parental approval tools. Roblox said this flexibility ensures fair access while maintaining safety standards.
Age Groups, Chat Limits, and Parental Controls Explained
After verification, users gain access to age-based communication features. Roblox has divided its users into six age categories. These include under 9, 9 to 12, 13 to 15, 16 to 17, 18 to 20, and 21 plus.
Chat access depends heavily on these age groups. Players can communicate only with users in their own age group or adjacent groups. This system aims to limit cross-age interactions and reduce the risk of inappropriate contact.
For children under the age of nine, chat remains disabled by default. Parents can enable communication features only after completing verification and providing consent. Roblox said parental controls play a key role in managing younger usersโ experiences.
The company explained that this new approach is more accurate than relying on self-declared birth dates during account creation. Roblox believes facial and ID verification offers better protection against age misrepresentation.
Roblox said it will continue to refine its safety systems. The company aims to balance user privacy, accessibility, and child protection as its platform continues to grow worldwide.
