Robert Pattinson has shared a surprisingly candid and “very strange” detail about himself — his long-standing fascination with smells, particularly his own.
The Twilight star, 39, recently spoke to GQ about his love for fragrances and body scent, revisiting a revelation he first made several years ago. Back in February 2020, Pattinson told Allure that people often commented on his unusual natural smell.
“Lots of people tell me I smell like a crayon,” he said at the time. “I think something has changed. My body chemistry has changed. It’s very strange. But I 100% used to smell exactly like a crayon.”
The actor elaborated that the scent was unmistakable. “It was a very crayon-y one,” Pattinson said, adding that before this phase his body odour was far stronger. “Before that, it was quite a kind of vicious, vicious scent,” he explained.
Reflecting on the shift, the The Odyssey actor offered a philosophical take. “Then something, I think, when it became crayon-y, it was like something died,” he said. “I guess the seven-year cycle… maybe I was smelling of crayons when one self died, and when a new self was born, it was less scented.”
Pattinson, who welcomed a baby girl with fiancée Suki Waterhouse in March 2024, has also spoken about how fatherhood changed his perception of scent. In an interview with Vogue, he admitted he once believed people only liked the smell of babies because of baby powder.
“But then I had a baby, and I was like, ‘my baby smells incredible,’” he said with a laugh.
The actor added that his daughter has a unique scent that helps him identify her. “She doesn’t smell like other babies,” he said.
The couple has not publicly revealed their daughter’s name.
