Fresh fighting has erupted in northern Afghanistan as the National Resistance Front (NRF) reported new clashes with Taliban forces. The incidents took place in Baghlan and Panjshir provinces, areas that have seen repeated tensions in recent months. According to the NRF, its fighters inflicted casualties on Taliban units during separate engagements.
Although independent verification remains difficult, the claims highlight continued instability and armed resistance in parts of the country. Meanwhile, the Taliban have not issued any official response so far.
Clashes Reported in Baghlanโs Nahrin District
According to an official statement released by the NRF, Taliban fighters launched an attack on one of its positions in Nahrin district of Baghlan province. In response, NRF combatants returned fire and resisted the assault. As the exchange intensified, the resistance group claimed it killed three Taliban fighters.
Moreover, the NRF stated that its defensive response forced Taliban forces to retreat from the area. The group described the clash as brief but intense. It also said the attack formed part of a broader pattern of Taliban operations aimed at suppressing resistance strongholds in northern Afghanistan.
Baghlan has remained strategically important due to its location and terrain. Therefore, clashes in the province often raise concerns about wider security implications. However, no local officials or independent observers have confirmed the NRFโs account.
Panjshir Remains a Key Flashpoint
In addition to Baghlan, the NRF also reported heavy fighting in Panjshir province. The region has long symbolised armed resistance and continues to witness periodic confrontations. According to the NRF, clashes erupted at multiple locations across Panjshir.
The resistance group claimed that at least 17 Taliban members were killed during these engagements. Furthermore, the NRF alleged that those killed included the Talibanโs chief of staff operating in the area. If confirmed, such a loss could significantly affect local command structures.
The NRF also alleged that Taliban forces shot and killed a local shepherd during the fighting. The group described the incident as an example of civilian harm amid ongoing conflict. However, no independent confirmation of this claim has emerged.
Despite these reports, the Taliban have remained silent. They have neither confirmed nor denied the alleged casualties or clashes in Panjshir.
Verification Challenges and Rising Tensions
Verifying battlefield claims in Afghanistan remains extremely challenging. Access to conflict zones is limited. Information flows are tightly controlled. As a result, competing narratives often emerge after such incidents.
Nevertheless, analysts say the claims reflect persistent resistance activity. They also underline the fragile security situation in parts of northern Afghanistan. Moreover, repeated clashes raise concerns about civilian safety and long-term stability.
The NRF stated that both incidents form part of its ongoing operations against the Taliban. The group reaffirmed its commitment to resisting Taliban control. At the same time, observers warn that continued fighting could further destabilise already vulnerable regions.
For now, tensions remain high in Baghlan and Panjshir. The situation continues to evolve as both sides maintain their positions.
