LAHORE/ISLAMABAD: The Punjab administration has imposed a ban on political speeches in the mosques. Initially, the government has enforced a ban in Rawalpindi, and later on, authorities will extend it to other cities. Now, there is a complete ban on delivering political speeches or making statements against the federal or Punjab governments, state institutions, or national figures from mosque pulpits.
Move Aims to Prevent Political Use of Mosques
The decision, ordered by the Deputy Commissioner (DC), seeks to prevent the use of mosques for political or inflammatory purposes. Following the directive, police stations across the district have begun collecting written undertakings from imams and khateebs, pledging to avoid political commentary during sermons.
Clerics Asked to Sign Affidavits
An official pro forma containing ten conditions has been distributed to all mosques. The forms are read aloud by assisting sub-inspectors, after which mosque leaders must sign and affix thumbprints to confirm compliance. The affidavit warns that any violation will lead to legal action, including arrest and prosecution.
Restrictions on Political and Sectarian Content
According to the document, clerics are barred from discussing politics, criticising the government, or making statements against state institutions, intelligence agencies, or national figures. The order also prohibits using mosques for political gatherings, party promotion, or sectarian rhetoric.
Preachers are instructed to follow all administrative guidelines during Friday prayers, Eid congregations, and other major religious occasions.
Loudspeaker and Content Restrictions
The order limits the use of loudspeakers to the azan (call to prayer), Friday sermons, and official announcements. The distribution of hate material or sectarian propaganda within mosques has also been strictly banned.
Enforcement and Compliance Measures
Any imam or khateeb, who violated this discipline, will face stern action. Imam and Khateeb will also sign the affidavits to follow instructions.
Meanwhile, all the SHOs will make sure the enforcement of the ban with immediate effect.
