
KARACHI: Karachi received heavy rainfall on Thursday as a westerly weather system reached the city, prompting authorities to declare a rain emergency.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported rain in several areas including Quaidabad, Malir, PAF Faisal Base, Jinnah Terminal, Gulshan-e-Maymar, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Saddar, Clifton, Garden, and Keamari. Some parts of the city also experienced isolated hail along with strong winds and thundershowers.
The maximum temperature is expected to stay between 25ยฐC and 27ยฐC, with mostly cloudy conditions and chances of more heavy rain.
Emergency Measures Activated
Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi announced that a rain emergency has been declared across the city. He said all relevant departments have been put on high alert to deal with the situation.
Citizens facing any problems can contact the rescue helpline at 1299 for immediate help.
The commissioner said staff from the water board, town administrations, and solid waste management have been deployed. Machinery and vehicles are actively working to clear rainwater from roads.
Sindh Government on High Alert
Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said the provincial government had made advance preparations for the rains. He added that leaves of essential staff have been cancelled and extra de-watering pumps have been installed at low-lying and choking points.
Furthermore, the minister urged citizens to take precautionary measures and contact the authorities immediately in case of any emergency.
Sindh Inspector General of Police Javed Alam Odho also directed police control rooms to stay fully alert and coordinate closely with rescue agencies.
