Queen Elizabeth II, who oversaw the fairly peaceful breakup of an empire that once spanned the globe and whose reign saw Britain transition from the steam age to the era of smartphones, has passed away. She was 96.
According to a statement from Buckingham Palace, she passed away peacefully on September 8 in the afternoon at her estate in Balmoral, Scotland.

Prince Charles, her son, and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, are staying in Balmoral.
Just before 6:00 p.m. BST, her grandson, the Duke of Cambridge, along with his wife Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, and other sons, the Duke of York and the Earl of Wessex, landed at Aberdeen airport.
The Queen breathed her last at Balmoral Castle where she was under โmedical supervisionโ. The tragic news left millions of her fans crying and mourning.
