Qatar Urges Israel to Cease Fire in Line With Trump’s Gaza Proposal
Qatar’s foreign ministry has stated that Israel should have already halted its military operations in Gaza if it truly adheres to the peace framework proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. The remarks highlight growing regional pressure on Israel to observe the terms of the recently introduced Gaza peace initiative.
During a media briefing in Doha, Qatari foreign ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari emphasized that Israel was expected to cease hostilities once it endorsed the Trump plan. He said that if Israeli leaders genuinely supported the initiative, their government should have already implemented a full ceasefire.
Ongoing Indirect Talks Between Hamas and Israel
Indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel are currently underway in Egypt. These discussions focus on the 20-point proposal announced by President Trump, which aims to establish a permanent ceasefire and outline a roadmap for Gaza’s post-war governance.
Last week, Hamas agreed to engage in talks about a hostage-release deal as part of the peace plan. In response, President Trump urged Israel to stop its bombardment of Gaza. He wrote on his Truth Social account that Israel “must immediately stop the bombing of Gaza so that hostages can be released safely and quickly.”
Qatar Highlights Complexity of Negotiations
Ansari expressed cautious optimism regarding the Egypt-hosted discussions. He stated that all parties appear committed to finding a consensus, yet warned that “many details need careful consideration.” According to him, the plan’s terms require “practical interpretation on the ground,” which demands continuous communication and coordination among all stakeholders involved.
He further mentioned that while optimism exists, the negotiation process remains fragile. The success of the talks depends on mutual trust and a shared willingness to implement the peace plan effectively.
Doha’s Role in Mediating Peace Efforts
Commenting on the future of Hamas’s political bureau in Doha, Ansari said it was “too early” to predict any changes. The bureau has served as a vital communication channel between Hamas and other regional actors. Despite recent Israeli strikes targeting Hamas leadership in Qatar, Doha continues to play an active mediating role.
Ansari reiterated that as long as a communication channel is necessary to facilitate peace, Qatar will maintain its diplomatic engagement. The country remains committed to supporting dialogue that promotes regional stability and humanitarian relief for Gaza’s population.
Positive Developments Reported in Egypt Talks
Sources close to the Palestinian negotiation team described the ongoing talks in Egypt as “positive.” The first round reportedly lasted four hours and made some progress toward mutual understanding. The discussions are set to continue in the Egyptian resort city of Sharm El-Sheikh.
Another source confirmed that the negotiations would resume around midday, signaling a cautious step forward in efforts to end months of violence in Gaza.
Regional and International Focus on Ceasefire Implementation
The call from Qatar adds diplomatic weight to international appeals urging Israel and Hamas to commit to a lasting truce. With growing humanitarian concerns in Gaza, the international community views the Trump peace plan as a potential foundation for restoring calm and rebuilding the war-torn region.
Although challenges remain, the continuation of indirect talks and Qatar’s active involvement underscore renewed momentum toward achieving a sustainable ceasefire. The coming days will determine whether the parties can turn dialogue into tangible progress for peace in Gaza.
